People saw Mother Theresa and assumed she was born an incredibly spiritual woman, and was always
committed to selfless contribution to the poor. Yet. Mother Theresa did not set out to be the champion of
the poor. For more than 20 years, she taught the children of wealthy families in Calcutta.
Every day, she looked out over the impoverished slums and never ventured outside her comfortable surroundings.
But, one night, she was walking home and heard a woman cry out for help. The moment this woman fell
into Mother Theresa’s arms, her life changed forever.
Mother Theresa took this unknown woman to the nearest hospital. She was told to sit and wait. The caste
system of India placed little importance on the dying woman. Knowing that she needed immediate
attention, Mother Theresa took the woman to another hospital, where she was again told to wait.
With no medical attention being given, Mother Theresa, in desperation, took the woman home. Later that
night, the woman died in Mother Theresa’s loving arms.
In that moment, Mother Theresa decided that this would never happen again to anyone within her reach.
She decided to devoter her life to easing the pain of those who suffered, and whether they lived or died,
they would do so with dignity. She would do everything in her power to see that they would be treated
better than they had ever been trerated in their entire lives, with the love and respect that all people
deserve.
